Remember when the Black Eyed Peas used to be the hottest thing in hip-hop? I do. Their debut album Elephant was great because it

gave us a memorable song by the name of  Where Is the Love? The song combined a fresh style with socially-conscious lyrics that made people re-evaluate the world they were living in, all in 4 or so minutes. The band, as is known, continued to be successful despite allegations of them plagarizing almost all their hits from other sources. Somewhere along the line, though, they went from being all about hip-hop into David Guetta‘s dream-project, as demonstrated by their last album The E.N.D, where their most successful song, at least in this country, I Gotta Feeling was produced by said person. So, bye bye hip-hop, and hello really cliche electronic music.

Well, they’re doing it again with this month’s release of *drum roll please, because really this is going to be a surprise* The Beginning, which judging by the album’s first single is going to be very, very much like it’s predesecor.

So let’s talk about that single, The Time (Dirty Bit) which is set to be released as a single just four days before the album (Really now? Smart marketing move BEP).

Dirty Dancing

For those of you who may be too young to remember or do not care about musical films, the group heavily samples I’ve Had the Time of My Life from 1987 movie Dirty Dancing. It’s sung by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Of course, the movie stared Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray (who later became infamous for her nose job). But that’s not the point.

It’s a cheesy song, but, every time I hear it, I still swoon over it (though I’ve never seen the movie, just head the song). This is why what the Black Eyed Peas have done to it is an inexcusable way of butchering a classic just so they could make people dance.

Here is the video (from the movie actually)

Now, let’s move onto the 2010 version. I hope they actually had the rights to sample the song.

The name has been shortened to The Time, and Dirty Bit has been added to it. Why? I don’t know. The song begins with an electronic sot of watch ticking before sings (thank you Auto-tune)  the first verse of the original song followed by Fergie on the second bit, who is stretching out her vocals just a tad too much, and then we go into the electro-music overload, before the BEP men start to rap, with lyrics that I don’t understand how they relate to the original. The electro-overload is actually seriously bad, there’s just too much going on, when they could tone it down and get the lyrics in place.

I don’t know how to look at this song. My first impression is that it’s bad, but if anything they’ve done before is indicative, they’re gonna have yet another chart-topper, and people are going to be playing this a whole lot more than it deserves. Oh well, you be the judge.
